Large, pendulous breasts cause physical problems for many women. Symptoms include heaviness in the breasts, difficulty with physical activity, back and neck pain, skin irritation and bra straps digging into shoulder grooves. Most women are also very self-conscious about the size of their breasts.
Breast reduction surgery repositions nipples at a higher, more normal location while reducing the size of the breast. Excess skin also needs to be removed. Recently, reduction surgery with shorter scars has increased in popularity, although only a modest amount of breast and skin can be removed.
The traditional breast reduction surgery, resulting in anchor shaped scars, is necessary for most women undergoing this procedure. As a considerable amount of skin, fat and breast tissue needs to be removed, these scars could be significant. After healing from surgery, however, women feel physically more comfortable and in most cases, have a vastly improved quality of life.
